Down-river cruise along the Mekong

After a two hour drive to Perth we fly with Singapore Airlines from Perth in Western Australia to Siem Reap in Cambodia, via Singapore:

Itinerary of the Adventurer

Our Singapore airlines flight details

We leave Perth at 1:10 a.m. on Sunday morning and arrive in Singapore at 6:25 a.m., departing Singapore at 8:40 a.m. and arriving in Siem Reap at 9:50 a.m. which will be 10:50 a.m. our (Perth) time.

Heaven knows how tired we'll be upon arrival. We hope to get some sleep on the plane but I might have to find something to assist us.

We have a tour of Siem Reap in the afternoon and it involves visiting Angkor Wat so we have to be awake enough to enjoy the experience of such a place. It would have been nice to have had an extra day in Siem Reap before the touring element began but that was not possible.

Raffles Hotel
Room at the Raffles Grand D'Angkor in Siem Reap

Raffles Grand d'Angkor Hotel in Siem Reap

Our first two nights' accommodation are at the Raffles Grand d'Angkor Hotel which is a five star establishment. It looks rather splendiferous according to the photos I've seen online. We have a few day tours whilst in Siem Reap.

The Raffles is located in the old French Quarter of Siem Reap. The hotel is rich in Cambodian history and is full of Cambodian treasures. There is a 1932 original lift in the hotel lobby. The doormen wear uniforms inspired by the royal palace and the colour of their trousers changes each day. "If it is orange, then it must be Monday". The guest rooms are beautifully restored.

Their website says there are 15 acres of French Gardens which interest us enormously. We will find a swimming pool and frangipani trees.

We could try a Raffles afternoon tea but I'd hate to think how much that costs. I don't think we shall attend that. However breakfast is included in the tariff so we shall eat well in the mornings.

The Adventurer cruise

After our two nights at the hotel we have the 7 night cruise detailed above. We will travel 350 km. along the Mekong River. I can see we are going to get "up close and personal" with the locals whilst on the boat. Should be a wonderful experience.

Caravelle Hotel in ho Chi Minh CityRoom at the Caravelle in Saigon

The Caravelle Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City

The Caravelle Hotel is rated as five stars too. I'm not sure we have ever stayed in hotels as grand as these two. I hope we don't feel out of place. The place was built in 1959. This hotel apparently has a fleet of Mercedes cars for ferrying guests around in. They have specially designed beds - what more could one ask for? We will still bring our own pillows with us though. The rooms are spacious and the staff are wonderful according to Trip Advisor.

It is situated in a prime location in Ho Chi Minh City, within walking distance of a lot of attractions. Reports say the breakfast is superb and I believe that is included in our stay.

Flying back to Perth

After our two nights at the Caravelle Hotel we head home. Our Singapore Airlines flight leaves Ho Chi Minh City at 12:30 p.m., arriving into Singapore at 3:30 p.m., departing there at 6:45 p.m. and then into Perth at midnight. Another long day but it can't be helped. We then go and find our car and travel the two hours back to our home town.
