Captain Cook's Memorial

Previous page: Mt. Pitt and the Botanic Gardens

From the Botanic Gardens we kept going in a northerly direction.

We wanted to see where Captain Cook came ashore in 1774. If the signage is correct he came ashore in what we would have thought was a very silly place. The coast is extremely rocky and the incline so steep surely no-one could have climbed it.

There is a one and a half hour walk from this point which might have been quite interesting but the weather was closing in and we didn't want to be too far from the car if the rain started.

The skies were closing in on us so we opted for an early return to our cottage at Governor's Resort. This was the coolest day we had found so far on the island. It was quite windy with no sign of blue skies. We hope the weather will improve so we can re-trace our steps and take better photographs.

Divine bowl of soup at Bailey's My soup at Bailey's was enormous

For dinner we decided to have an evening meal at Bailey's as opposed to the many lunches we'd enjoyed there.

The meal was perfectly presented. I had tomato soup and it was the biggest serving of soup I have ever seen. The photo doesn't really illustrate how big the bowl was.

For main course I ordered an entree sized prawn salad with a coconut and lime dressing. Ian ordered Scotch fillet with a sweet potato mash and vegies.

It really was excellent quality food. The chef here is quite talented.

Our dinner cost $72 AUD (no wine) but was truly delicious. However, you need to compare that to the excellent $10 lunches served at this restaurant and make your judgement.
