Complimentary Life of a Convict Tour

Our complimentary tour was due to start at 1 p.m. We had to meet the tour bus near the Post Office in the main street. Our tour guide and bus driver was Arthur Evans. At first Arthur seemed gruff and not overly out-going or friendly but, by golly, were we pleased he was our guide. Arthur is the official historian of Norfolk Island and has so much of the island's history in his care.

It was soon evident this man is extremely passionate about the island's history. The history is very precious to him and we were all pretty much warned not to ever make light of the penal history within his earshot.

At each spot we were driven to Arthur detailed some of the history and we stood there in stony silence whilst he spoke. The things he told us were unfathomable in the day and age in which we live. In reality none of us had even the vaguest idea of what life was like on the island in the bad old days. These are some of the facts Arthur told us about the convicts who were sent here and their punishment:
