The Sound and Light Tour

Complimentary Sound and Light Show

At 7:45 p.m. we climbed aboard another mini bus for our free Sound and Light Tour. I was concerned that this would be amateurish but how wrong could I be! Our bus driver took off towards Kingston with another little tour bus in front of us. As our bus drove the streets of the island we were treated to a running, pre-recorded commentary about how awful life as a prisoner on the island was.

We first went down near the Kingston Jetty area and the buses drove slowly around the ruins with no head lights on. The buses were only a couple of feet away from each other so it was somewhat disconcerting to be that close to another vehicle in total darkness. There was no doubt the drivers knew what they were doing though.

I soon realized people were looming behind the bus. They were actors and they began playing the roles of prisoners and guards and they were decked out in the appropriate clothing of the times. Each time a fresh scene was being reenacted the area would be instantly floodlit with theatrical lighting and a story was told over the p.a system inside the bus.

This was so effective and very much brought gaol life right into our faces. The buses continued on to various spots in Kingston where the island's penal history evolved. The story of incarceration was so dreadful. We watched prisoners in chains being beaten by guards and it all looked so incredibly real.

The sound and Light Show One of the scenes played out in the darkness

One prisoner "told" us his incarceration toted up to 42 years. Over those years he said had been flogged 3,000 times. We heard how guards would force their dirty fingers into convicts mouths at any time of the day or night. The guards were looking for hidden tobacco. Some of the things that went on were gross beyond belief.

The organization and acting on this tour was brilliant. I tried to take photos but in the darkness and with the bus moving it was a fairly fruitless exercise. There are some much better photos here: Sound and Light Show

We have now been on three complimentary tours and every one of them has been exceedingly professional. For more details of the island's tours and events see Norfolk Island Tours.
