The Commissariat Museum and Church

The Commissariat Store was opened in 1835. There was a previous Commissariat close to the jetty but it was flooded in 1834. It was then decided to build a new store further back from the water front. The new store was located in Quality Row and is now a museum.

This museum houses artifacts dating back to the Polynesian settlement of the island. It also covers the later settlements. There were three floors plus a basement in this grand Georgian building and the upper area is a church. One floor was demolished to house the two story church. The church is accessed from the outside steps that were added to the structure later. The steps up to the church actually hide part of the lower windows which is a bit strange.

In the museum we saw ceramics, beads, leg irons and other awful reminders of the island's past history.

Lunch at Bailey's

By now our tummies were rumbling. Where-ever you are on this island it is only a quick drive to reach somewhere else on the island. We thought we would whizz back to Governor's for another scrumptious lunch at Bailey's. How they can serve these large meals for only $10 beggars belief.

HMS Sirius Exhibition

After our late lunch we waddled back to our car and drove to the Sirius Exhibition which is housed in the former Protestant chapel on Bounty Street. The museum is dedicated to the history of the First Fleet flagship, the Sirius. The Sirius was wrecked on the island in 1790. In this exhibition you will see the anchor, cannon balls and so much more. 6,000 items were collected from the wreck site.

At the end of the exhibition we watched a 25 minute video which showed us scenes of the divers salvaging the wreckage back in the 1980's. Sadly I nodded off several times during that 25 minutes.
